Shandon Family Dentistry

I told the Dentist and staff that I didn't like that hygienist polished my teeth before cleaning them and that I never had it done in that order before. They ALL got upset with me, and the dentist said he takes it personal that I asked other people if they ever had their teeth cleaned in that order. The lady that did my X-ray jumped in the conversation all defensive when I was not even talking to her. They do not like feedback, questions or concerns. Also, I was questioning that they said they have to bill my Health insurance FIRST and then my Dental insurance second. I was just expressing that these things never occurred before, but they all got irate that I was even asking the question. The dentist said by me asking others questions, it makes them look bad, as if they are doing something wrong. I asked him, are you saying I can't ask questions. I told him I was coming to him, as the owner, but I guess he doesn't appreciate that. Make this make sense.
Worst experience ever. I’ve never had tooth pain until after visiting this dentist. I went in for a cleaning and was told I needed over 8 fillings which is just not true. My teeth are very healthy. I agreed to the fillings because I thought it would be safe to trust a "professional" but this was the worse decision ever. Ever since I got the fillings my ear AND jaw has been in extreme achy pain. I don’t know what he did in my mouth during the procedure but something is just not right. I have never had tooth related pain ever in life. Now I'm having to take pain medicine just to relieve the misery. I feel I like he suggested fillings to make some money because they were definitely not needed. I know people who have terrible cavities and still don’t have fillings. Teeth are very important and once they are compromised there is no going back. I really really really regret going here. It sucks when you try to be a responsible, healthy adult and end up regretting it. I do not recommend.
This has been the worst dental experience I’ve had. I previously requested a printed breakdown of my costs, but it was never provided. When I arrived for my appointment, I was told I had to pay $1,000 upfront out of pocket, despite being informed earlier that I had no remaining balance. Additionally, the front desk staff was very rude and unprofessional. There was no greeting—only a blunt demand for my name followed immediately by payment information. Overall, the lack of communication, transparency, and professionalism made this a very unpleasant experience.
Weird policies … If you have a follow up appointment they wait for your next visit to let you know you have an outstanding balance, and cannot be seen (in pain) unless it is paid on the spot. No letter sent beforehand to make you aware. Very shoddy work, leaving space for food to get trapped in my gums, causing pain that they refused to correct. So this office filed a false insurance claim, stating the incorrect tooth number treated, to cover up the gap that was left open in my gums for the actual tooth that WAS treated. I reported it to my insurance carrier. Then, on a 3-way call to the office with my insurance company, the Billing person was very unprofessional, and rudely hung up on us! You would think that a "family practice", would treat their patients "like family"! My bad, I usually read the reviews. Reviews don’t lie!
The Doctor is friendly, and thorough. I think he loves his job. He listens, and he explains the treatment plan in a way you can understand. He also, referred me to see a specialist. I had a new technician for my cleaning. She did my cleaning differently. She polished my teeth first and then clean them. I needed numbing gel for my sensitive gums. She made a negative comment about that. For the first time ever I didn't feel I had a great cleaning. She didn't set up my next appointment. She didn't give me the new toothbrush, take home package. She's new, I hope she improves.
Highly unrecommended. This was one of the worst dental experiences I’ve had. Columbia in general is going downhill, especially with their healthcare service providers! I will not be returning. Dr. Desai needs a new profession.
Today was Cruz’s first visit to Shandon Family Dentist and instead of focusing on his care the experience became about coercion and control. I was presented with two consent forms. One was for treatment which I was fine with. The other was for anesthesia. I explained multiple times that I was not comfortable signing an anesthesia consent just in case and that I would prefer to consent only if an actual need arose. The staff told me the dentist would not even see my child unless I signed it. Under pressure and to avoid Cruz being denied care I signed the form and clearly wrote that I do not consent and that I was signing under duress. Minutes later staff returned to say the dentist still would not see him because of how I signed. This was about anesthesia for a child with perfect dental health and not an urgent or needed procedure. This experience showed me how some healthcare providers use consent as a formality rather than a genuine choice and how they can bully patients into agreeing to something they are not comfortable with. That is not care. That is coercion.
